Archaeology Notes

NT15NE 55 1852 5816

There is an oval enclosure on the SW end of a kaim just SE of the A 766 public road at its junction with the A 702. The enclosure is formed by an irregular ditch and bank measuring approximately 20m in length by 10m in width. The mound within the enclosure is probably natural, forming part of the end of the kaim.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE) 18 September 1994.

Examination of vertical aerial photographs (RAF 106G/Scot/UK14, 5112, taken 15 April 1946) has identified that the enclosure had been used as a World War II entrenchment. The print (no.5112) has noted on the reverse that this was a 'Home Guard entrenchment'. A continous zig-zag trench can be seen in the photograph, but whether this forms part of the irregular ditch mentioned above is not clear.
