(NX 8585 7743) Scarr Jail (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

An old stone building with an arched dome, used as a prison during the time of the Covenanters' persecution. It is now used as one of the offices belonging to Scarr farm. Mr. Welsh, the proprietor, states that his father remembered a watch tower adjoining this building, the whole being enclosed by a strong wall. These traditions are also quoted by other local people.

Name Book 1850; M Harper 1896

The jail has been totally demolished, and according to the present farmer who confirmed the site, nothing of interest was found. The farm's name has been recently altered to Scaur.

Visited by OS (DWR) 19 November 1973.
