Archaeology Notes (14 November 1972)

NT58SE 18 c. 599 829.

NT 599 829. Settlement in the form of a circular hut about 7m in diameter and other paved and cobbled areas, has been identified by excavation by Clarke in 1969 and 1970 in the immediate vicinity of the findspot of a small Iron Age (probably 1st c.AD) hoard of bronze objects found during turnip lifting in May 1965.

The hoard consisted of a beaded torc, a spiral bracelet and a ring, probably a rein-ring from a bridle. The objects were much worn but in very good condition.

Finds from the excavations included a 2nd c Roman bronze Dolphin brooch (A S Robertson 1970) pottery, quernstones, slag, worked bone objects and considerable quantities of animal bones and sea shells; also patera fragment.
