Archaeology Notes

NO64SW 15 c. 643 413

The graves of the dead of this battle 'have been from time to time found below the surface of the ground on both sides of the Brothock. The skulls and other bones which were recently disinterred in the course of excavations made at Orchard Street (NO 639 412) were probably the mutilated remains of some of these combatants'.

D Miller 1860

(Area NO 643 413) A battle took place in front of the great gate of the Abbey on 29 January 1446 between the Ogilvys and the Lindsays over an appointment to the office of Bailie of the Regalitie. 'It was calculated that 500 of the Ogilvys perished and at least a hundred of the Lindsays. The bodies of the gentlefolk were interred with great solemnity in the Abbey Church: the humbler people were buried in the cemetry without'.

S Cruden 1954
