Field Visit (9 September 2014)
This air shaft is situated on the eastern edge of coniferous woodland 60m NW of Vantage. The top of the shaft is surrounded by a mortared stone wall about 4m in diameter by 1.5m in height which supports a concrete cap at the centre of which is a steel inspection hatch. The shaft is annotated 'Old Coal Pit' on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife 1854, Sheet 39).
