Archaeology Notes

NG29SW 8026 c. 24 94

N57 51 W6 39

NLO: Scalpay (Scalpaigh) [name centred NG 23 95]

Loch an Tairbeairt [name centred NG 188 962].

Possibly on map sheets NG19NW, or NG29NW.

See also NG37NW 8001.

(No classification, cargo or date of loss cited). Eugenie: this vessel stranded on the rock that now bears its name close [to the] South of Sgeir Graitich. Pre-1866.

(Location of loss cited as N57 47.0 W6 27.67).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative, the location cited by Whittaker being unconvincing and corresponding to no mapped feature.. Neither Sgeir Graitich [Graidach] nor Eugenie Rock is noted on the 1997 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map.

By extrapolation from the loss that is entered as NG29SW 8025, the loss of this vessel may have occurred near Eilean Glas Lighthouse (NG29SW 1.00), at NG 24743 94715. It may also be tentatively equated with that entered as NG37NW 8001.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 July 2008.
