Archaeology Notes

NT19NE 76 centred 1963 9777

What may be a prisoner-of-war camp has been identified from postwar RAF vertical air photographs (58(A)386, Pt.1, 5400-5402, flown 21 May 1948), is situated immediately to the N of the B9097 road about 200m NE of the Westfield Transmitting Station. Capeldrae Row (miners' cottages) which were formerly between the camp and the road have been removed in the postwar period, the current version of the OS digital 1:2500 scale map shows one or two huts within the camp area.

This camp may be that recorded in the Public Record Office (PRO), Kew, London, but whose location was not known.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), July 2004.
