Archaeology Notes

NK03SW 15 c. 04 33.

Finds from Fernie Brae, Lochlundie Moss (NK 04 33) include:

Flint flakes and cores similar to those (allegedly mesolithic) found at the mouth of the Ytham.

A canoe with broken oars found in several feet of peat.

A broken stone axe, originally about 10" long.

A flint spearhead, 4 1/2" long.

Two leaf-shaped arrowheads.

J Dalgarno 1876.

Fernie Brae unlocated. No further information.

Visited by OS (NKB) 3 September 1970.

Dalgarno notes the discovery of a logboat and 'broken oars' during peat-digging in Lochlundie Moss, near Ferny Brae and 'at a depth of several feet'. Lochlundie Moss is a raised peat-bog at an altitude of about 70m OD and the discovery was probably made before 1867, at which date the Name Book notes that the moss was 'pretty well drained'.

J Dalgarno 1876; OS Name Book; R J C Mowat 1996.
