Archaeology Notes

NJ54NW 21 c. 52 49.

The presence of an intermediate Roman camp, somewhere in the vicinity of the confluence of the Rivers Isla and Deveron (NJ 53 47), is suggested by the unusually long distance of 18 miles between Glenmailen (NJ63NE 2) and Auchinhove (NJ45SE 5).

Slightly elevated ground, now wooded, 2 miles from Sillyearn Ridge (NJ 51 52), is suggested as the most likely site although there is no evidence on the ground. (?Tarryblake Wood: NJ 52 49.)

The author suggests the area between the alleged camp and the ridge as the site of the battle of Mons Graupius (83-84 AD) since it appears to fit Tacitus' account.

D Henderson-Stewart 1960.
