Stromness, 28th Jan. The GNOME (s.s.), of and from Grangemouth, for the Clyde, in entering this harbour on the 23rd Jan., ran aground on the Holme side: some coals have been taken out of her, and it is thought she will not sustain damage.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Stromness harbour has few structures and no breakwater as such. It is formed by a prolonged voe heading northwards from about HY 257 082, and partly protected by the islands of Inner and Outer Holm on the E. The 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map notes Harbour [NAT] around HY 256 085.

The location of 'the quarries' remains unclear, but the name may apply to the islands of Inner Holm and Outer Holm, which are noted on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map at HY 260 087 and HY 260 083 respectively.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably suggesting her successful recovery.
