(NO 1027 3851) Stone Circle (NR)

OS 6" map (1959)

Prior to the laying-out of the asylum at Murthly in 1863-4, this stone circle stood out prominently in an open field but it is now planted and surrounded by an earthen mound. It is probable that the circle originally comprised 8 stones, of which 5 remain ranging from 3 1/2 to 8ft in height.

In 1863-4, some cinerary urns were found within a few yards of the circle, some in groups of 2 and 3 and one series arranged in a circle. One example however, was buried alone, and contained partly burnt human bones, possibly of a child, together with a perforated bone object, probably a button or plaything.

F R Coles 1908; A Mitchell 1873

Generally as described and planned by the above. The urns were not located.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 28 February 1969.
