Talla Castle occupies the whole of an island. Much of the material came from the priory (NN50SE 4): the constructional details suggest a 17th century date.

The south side presents "a remarkable example of the provision made for the defence of castles by means of outside hoardings". Such hoardings probably extended round most of the outside. The kennels were on Dog Island (NN50SE 72) and the stables and offices on the mainland.

Foundations on Stable Point (NN 567 004) are known as the Earl's Stables. The old kiln (MacGibbon and Ross 1887-92) is believed to have been used for drying malt used at the castle.

Name Book 1862.

Talla Castle is as described and planned by Macgibbon and Ross. The hall and keep survive to roof height; the brew-house and building on the west survive to a height of 1.3m. No traces of any hoarding can now be seen. There are no structures on Dog Isle, but on Stable Point, centred at NN 5668 0048, there are the grass-covered footings of four buildings with walls 1.0m thick; and the kiln.

On Stable Point (NN 5671 0048) three unroofed buildings annotated 'old kilns' which may be the stables and the possible malt drying kiln (ONB 1862) are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1866, sheet cxxx), but they are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978).
