Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Robert Watson, Buittle Parish Church and Churchyard, Dumfries & Galloway Occupying the upper part of the stone, beneath a pair of flowering rosettes, this beautifully carved winged cherub symbolises the soul's ascent to Heaven, its youthful features signifying innocence and purity. Beneath the cherub is a coiled snake, a Classical emblem of regeneration. Just as the snake sheds its skin to grow, so the soul sheds its body and continues its life in Heaven. At the foot of the stone, beneath the Classically-inspired pilasters (flattened Classical pillars) are the emblems of death, a skull and two bones. Post-Reformation gravestones like this are an important part of the nation's heritage, documenting the lives of ordinary Scots who would otherwise leave little record of their existence. Through the decorative carvings and inscriptions it is possible to learn more about the lives of these people, what they did for a living and even the clothes they wore and what they looked like. This gravestone commemorates Robert Watson, who died in 1777 aged 62 years, and his wife, Agnes McNish, who died in 1788 aged 85. The inscription reads: 'Here lys the/dust of Robert Wat/son who died in Cro/ckerford Novr 25th/1777 aged 62 years/& Agnes McNish his/spouse who died there/28th March 1778 aged 85'.
