Scope and Content Dr William Douglas Simpson illustrating a talk, Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire This photograph, taken in 1956, shows Dr William Douglas Simpson giving an illustrated talk outside the castle. He is standing in front of the south wall of the oldest part of the castle, and holding a plan of its ground and first floors. The ground-floor entrance was moved to the south front of the castle around 1795 by Miss Elyza Fraser (1734-1814). Dr William Douglas Simpson (1896-1968) was a historian and librarian with a particular interest in Scottish castles. He was a Chairman of the Ancient Monuments Board for Scotland and a Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. Castle Fraser, 26km west of Aberdeen, is a very interesting building, having been constructed over the course of at least four centuries. The oldest part dates from the 15th century, when the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood were granted by King James II (1437-60) to Thomas Fraser (d.1475) as a reward for his loyalty. The castle was known as Muchall-in-Mar until 1695. The castle is now owned by The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
