Scope and Content Carved panel above central arch, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph was taken in 1988, during restoration work. The carved panel is situated in a niche above the high arch that joins the two parts of the Seton tower, on the south elevation of the castle. It probably dates from the 19th century, when Alexander Forbes-Leith made a number of alterations to the south front. The carved panel takes the form of a thistle with a crown above it, an old Scottish symbol. During restoration work, much of the castle was covered in scaffolding. This allowed photographers an opportunity to record many parts of the building which had previously been inaccessible. Fyvie Castle is situated about 11km south of Turriff. It is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. The castle was built in the 13th century as a royal fortress, and passed into private hands in 1380. Six different families have successively had possession of the castle during its history, each making alterations and additions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
