Scope and Content Carved figure, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire During restoration, some pieces of stonework were removed from the castle for conservation reasons. This photograph shows a carved figure which has been removed from the top of a bartizan (small round turret) on the Seton Tower. The figure is holding a torch, and is one of a pair, with the other on the opposite bartizan. The exact age of the figure is unclear. It may date from the late 16th century, when Alexander Seton (1555-1622) made a number of alterations to the south front of the castle. Fyvie Castle is situated about 11km south of Turriff. It was first built in the 13th century as a royal fortress. In 1380 the castle was granted to Sir James Lindsay, and was then held successively by six families until 1984, when it was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland. In 1986, a programme of restoration began, which lasted until 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
