Scope and Content Dormer windows on north-west wing, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph shows details of dormer windows in the north-west wing of the castle. This wing, known as the Leith Tower, was built in 1890 to designs by the architect John Bryce (d.1922) for Alexander Forbes-Leith (1847-1925). The windows feature elaborate carved stonework and stained glass windows. The turret at the left of the photograph is very similar in appearance to ones built on the south wing of the castle around 1599 by Alexander Seton (1555-1622) In 1986, The National Trust for Scotland began a restoration project at Fyvie. This took seven years, and allowed a valuable opportunity, as the building was covered in scaffolding and photographers had access to previously inaccessible parts of the castle. Fyvie Castle, situated 11km south of Turriff, was built in the 13th century as a royal fortress. In 1380 it passed out of royal hands and was then owned successively by six different families, until 1984, when The National Trust for Scotland purchased the castle. Each family made their mark on the castle, and some made very substantial additions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
