Scope and Content Inchmahome Priory, Lake of Menteith, Stirling, from east-north-east This view from the east-north-east, taken in about 1901, shows the south wall of the choir of the priory church, with the east gable of the chapter house on the left. The choir dates from the mid-13th century, and the upper part of the chapter house was rebuilt in the 17th century, when it was converted into a burial aisle. The priory is on an island in the Lake of Menteith, and is reached by ferry, operating in the summer months. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, the priory is open to the public during the summer. Inchmahome Priory was founded as an Augustinian house in 1238 by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith. Considerable parts of both the priory church and the monastic buildings survive, much of the fabric dating from the 13th century. There are three fine recumbent tombs, and also remains of the monastic gardens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
