Scope and Content Edinburgh Corporation buses in Princes Street at Lothian Road, Edinburgh, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, shows Princes Street at Castle Street, with Edinburgh Castle in the background. The buses are Leyland 'Atlanteans', the first really successful rear-engined buses, introduced in the early 1960s. In 1979 they were operated by Lothian Regional Transport. Edinburgh Corporation phased out its electric trams in the mid-1950s, the last running in 1956. They were replaced by motor buses, painted in the same red and white livery as the trams. The services are now operated by Lothian Regional Transport, which was privatised in the 1990s. The New Town of Edinburgh was laid out in the 1750s by the Town Council of Edinburgh as a middle- and upper-class suburb. It was designed for wheeled traffic from the start, and horse buses were in use by the mid-19th century. These were supplanted by horse, cable, and then electric trams.
