Scope and Content Gravestone of James Dundas, Churchyard and Anglian Monastery, Abercorn Church, West Lothian This gravestone features a scrolled top from which sprout leaves, appropriate decoration for a forester's grave. Within the top panel are carved two stylised trees and a crossed axe, spade and pruning knife, the tools of the deceased's trade. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates James Dundas, who died in 1734. It is inscribed: 'Here lyes James Dundas/who died upon the 22 of/October 1732 aged ...years'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
