Scope and Content Photographic copy of designs for display units, Jenners, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh This shows a sheet of designs in pencil and coloured crayon for a stair, a shoe stand, a blouse fitment, fabric counter and millinery corner, which date from between 1950 and 1960. The designs are thought to be for fittings for Jenners, and are by Morton & Co, a firm of furniture makers established in Edinburgh in 1870. The modern design of these fittings would have been chosen to update the appearance of the store. The shoe display stand with its futuristic steel legs resting on red plastic balls is designed in the 'Atomic style' made popular by a building known as the Atomium, made for the World's Fair in Brussels in 1958 to designs by A Waterkeyn. This structure, based on the atomic structure of an iron crystal proved very influential in designs for furniture and household accessories, with its optimistic and futuristic associations. Jenners department store was built 1893-5 to designs by Sir William Hamilton Beattie (1840-98). This large, six-storeyed Renaissance-style building occupies a prime site on Princes Street, Edinburgh's main shopping street, and was one of the biggest department stores of its day.
