Scope and Content Inner service court from east-north-east, Glamis Castle, Angus This shows the courtyard outside the kitchen, which was located in the block to the right with the tiled awning supported by columns. Features on the top floor and attic of the tower in the background include the corbelled cap-house on the bay to the far right, and a corbelled round turret on the left. The three-storeyed block on the left is part of the east wing. By the 19th century the kitchen was entered through the white-painted door on the right. This was probably the most widely-used route, as the other entrance to the kitchen was through the scullery and bakehouse. The cap-house was originally the room used by a guard or lookout, but by 1924 the room was used as a water closet (WC, or toilet) with a cistern room above in the attic. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891.
