Scope and Content 'Dutch' garden from south-south-east, Glamis Castle, Angus This shows the 'Dutch' garden, which has box hedges enclosing flower beds (parterres) and a fountain with a bronze statue of Mercury (left). The three-storeyed and attic 1891 block in the background has two corbelled towers with conical roofs (one shown) and two crowstepped gables at each side of a central chimney-stack. The two-storeyed block to the right has crowstepped gables and curvilinear pediments over its dormer windows. Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 13th earl, commissioned Arthur Castings (d.1913) of Craig's Court, Charling Cross, in 1892 to design a garden for in front of the new family block. The earl had a huge input into the design and he ensured that features were based on elements found in other estates. The reason why he called it the 'Dutch' garden is not known. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891.
