Scope and Content Directory sign, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Crichton Institution for Lunatics, Dumfries, opened in 1839. Within two years, it became Crichton Royal Hospital, the seventh Royal Asylum to be established in Scotland. Crichton Royal quickly gained a high reputation for its enlightened attitude towards the care and treatment of the mentally ill. This shows a plan of the hospital with details of the many buildings constructed since its foundation to encompass changing theories on the accommodation and treatment of the mentally ill. The original 40-acre site, bought in 1834, had become 894 acres by 1933. Crichton Royal was founded by the Trustees of Dr James Crichton (1765-1823), Physician to the Governor General of India. Crichton had made a large fortune trading in the East and left a legacy of some £100,000 to charity. It is thought that the original hospital cost £38,000 to build and £4,500 to equip.
