Scope and Content Miss Kidston's Bedroom, Finlaystone House, Inverclyde (now the Laird's Room) Finlaystone House, originally built as a tower-house for the Dennistoun family in the late 14th century, was rebuilt and extended in 1746 by John Douglas as a handsome early Georgian mansion house for William, 12th Earl of Glencairn. In 1898-1903 the house was remodelled and refurbished in a grand style by the architect, Sir John James Burnet, for George Kidston, chairman of the Clyde Shipping Company. The interior was photographed by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after the refurbishment was completed in 1903. This rather elegant bedroom on the first floor retains its original 18th-century panelling and wooden fireplace (but with an early 20th-century grate inserted), and has a mix of largely 18th-century furniture. The four-poster bed is draped in fashionable floral fabric with the minimal amount of fringing and tasselling, and the mirrored overmantel is flanked by graceful electric light wall fittings. George Kidston (1835-1909) was the chairman of the Clyde Shipping Company, the first steamship company in the world. When his wife died young after giving birth to nine children, his considerable household was run by his sister, Miss Hamilton Campbell Kidston. Miss Kidston (or Auntie Bye, as her brother's children called her) ruled on the first floor, the traditional female domain, and had her bedroom next to the drawing room.
