Scope and Content David Hume Tower from the west, the Adam Ferguson Building, George Square Theatre, and Main Library, University of Edinburgh, George Square, Edinburgh George Square was selected for the extension of the University of Edinburgh in the late 1940s. Several large new buildings and towers were constructed during the 1960s, to designs by the following architects: Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson with Andrew Merrylees (Main Library); Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (David Hume Tower, William Robertson Building, Adam Ferguson Building and the George Square Theatre); and Alan Reiach, Eric Hall & Partners (Appleton Tower). This shows the south side of the square from the ramp which leads to a deck area running in front of the various buildings. The tower in the distance is David Hume Tower (built 1960-3), the lower buildings are the Adam Ferguson Building and George Square Theatre (built 1960-3). The large building with the balconies (right) is the Main Library (built 1965-7). These Modern buildings surround a garden within cast-iron railings (part of which is visible to the left) and were designed for the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences to provide lecture halls, tutorial rooms and libraries. The University of Edinburgh George Square Redevelopment has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
