Scope and Content Detail of plasterwork, on the first-floor drawing room fireplace, Egremont, No 38 Dick Place, Edinburgh Egremont is a Romanesque villa designed by architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98), and built 1864-70. It was the architect's own home and is ornately decorated both inside and outside. It was subdivided in 1929. This photograph shows a plasterwork putto, or tiny angel, on one side of the fireplace. An identical twin balances the design on the other side. The cherub is resting on scrolling plasterwork foliage and flowers are garlanded above. The winged figure probably represents cupid, an emblem of love, or is a putto, or tiny angel, and is a messenger from God. These figures are used to decorate both secular and religious buildings.
