Scope and Content Dining Room, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh Craigcrook Castle was extensively remodelled in 1835 by the architect, William Henry Playfair. The dining room dates from that reconstruction, and was photographed in 1927 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a Jacobean ceiling, and a stained glass window, partly hidden, in the corner. There is minimal use of furniture - sideboard, dining table and chairs - and a fringed lamp, which can be raised or lowered over the table, hangs in the centre. It is interesting to compare this photograph with one taken by Lemere of the same room in 1891 when it was cluttered with knick-knacks and heavy Victorian furniture. The fireplace, then possibly regarded as unsightly, was swathed in velvet and brocade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
