Scope and Content Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, from the south Craigcrook Castle, built in the 16th century as a tower-house for an Edinburgh merchant, was leased by the Croall family in 1875. It was photographed in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, for the then owner, Mr R Douglas Croall. The south front has the original fortified round tower of the castle in the south-west corner (left). Although the 17th-century main block, with its attachment of turreted stair-towers, was altered in the 19th century, it retains many of its old features. The house was built for William Adamson who bought Craigcrook estate in 1542. In the early 19th century it was leased to the publisher, Archibald Constable, and in 1815 was the home of the judge and literary critic, Lord Jeffrey, until his death in 1850.
