Scope and Content Sitting Room, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh Craigcrook Castle dates from the 16th century. In 1875 it was leased to Mr Robert Croall who carried out a series of improvements in 1891. This photograph of a sitting room was taken shortly afterwards by the architectural photographer, Bedford Lemere. This gloomy room is a classic case of Victorian clutter. Every available surface is crowded with knick-knacks or draped in silk (including the oil lamp on the table). Furnishings include an S-shaped 'love-seat' and a fireplace draped in velvet. It is interesting to compare this photograph with others taken by Lemere of the interior in 1927. By then the knick-knacks had been put away, the walls and ceiling lightened, the fireplaces undraped and the chairs and tables reduced to a minimum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
