Scope and Content Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, from the south Craigcrook Castle, built as a tower-house in the 16th century, stands in a wooded setting at the foot of Corstorphine Hill. The house was photographed c.1891 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, for its owner, Mr Robert Croall. The house is two-storeyed, with the original large round tower at the south-west corner (left), and a turreted stair in the south-east angle. The 17th-century main block, with its row of pedimented dormer windows, was altered in the 19th century. The Croall family became tenants of Craigcrook in 1875 when Mr Robert Croall leased the house. In 1891 he enlarged the building 'in a manner which enhanced its dignity without in the least degree detracting from its sweetness and grace'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
