Scope and Content Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, from the south Craigcrook Castle, dating from the 16th century, stands in woodland at the foot of Corstorphine Hill. The house was photographed by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, after it was enlarged in 1891 by the owner, Mr Robert Croall. The house has a 17th-century main block with the original three-storeyed round tower at the south-west corner (left). Although the main block was altered in the 19th century when the windows were enlarged, most of its old features were carefully preserved. The castle, built for William Adamson, a burgess of Edinburgh who died at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, was originally quite small and rectangular. It was greatly extended in the early 19th century for Lord Jeffrey, and again in 1891 for Mr Robert Croall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
