Scope and Content Lingerie Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street store was, when it opened in 1895, one of the largest department stores in Britain. This view of the lingerie department, one of over 60 departments in the store, was photographed in 1895 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The lingerie department is lined with tall, glass-fronted display cases containing fashionable night-gowns and undergarments. The bodices displayed at floor level may well have been repositioned by Lemere to improve the composition of the photograph. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) took great care with the composition of his pictures, frequently moving objects until the composition was right. His photographs of Jenners form an invaluable record of the interior of a late 19th-century department store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
