Scope and Content West Staircase, Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The west staircase of the Glasgow School of Art was added to the west end of the building by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, during the second phase of construction in 1907-9. This view of the stairwell was taken in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The surface of the staircase is of cement, and the walls are quite plain except for the decoration of rectangular tiles at the top and bottom of the steps. The motif of four white tiles surrounded by eight blue is the sign that it is the west staircase. Mackintosh used squares throughout his interior design of the School. He used permutations of white, blue and green tiles within a square in the walls of the staircases, pierced the backs of seats with squares, and used squares in doors and lights.
