Scope and Content Perth Waterworks, Tay Street, Perth, Perth & Kinross The original works on this site was built in 1832 to designs by Adam Anderson, architect and engineer. It contained a steam pump and boiler to pump water from a well beside the River Tay into a large cast-iron cistern, from which pipes carried it round the city. This shows the extension built in the early 20th century to house a steam pumping engine which replaced the original machine. The engine was built by Douglas & Grant of Kirkcaldy. The original building is to the rear. In 1973 the old works was restored and converted into a visitor centre. This involved the demolition of this engine and its extension. The building was again converted, this time into an art gallery, in 1992. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
