Scope and Content Hydraulic Pumping Station, Nos 321-5 High Street, Glasgow Glasgow was one of the few cities to have a public system for delivering hydraulic power to private subscribers. This station was built in 1893-5 to supply water at high pressure to premises in the central area to operate lifts, presses and other devices. This shows the station from the north-west. When built, this housed steam-driven hydraulic pumps to charge the hydraulic mains. Tanks on the roof stored water for the pumps. The Baronial style was chosen to complement the historic setting. The hydraulic power system continued in operation until 1964, latterly with electrically powered pumps. The development of electricity as a means of transmitting power halted expansion of hydraulic systems after the 1890s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
