Scope and Content Hydraulic Pumping Station, 295 High Street, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This station was built by Glasgow Corporation as the power station for a system of high-pressure water-mains supplying hydraulic power to industrial and commercial premises in and around the city centre, to power lifts, cranes and presses. This view shows the building from the north east. The decorative red sandstone frontage was designed to fit in with the churches, hospital and prison surrounding Cathedral Square. The station continued to supply hydraulic power until 1964. It was the only public facility of its kind in Scotland, largely because electricity superseded hydraulic pressure as an economic method of transmitting power. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
