Scope and Content Detail of north side of sundial at Ardlamont House, Argyll and Bute This sundial stands in the garden at Ardlamont House. It consists of three sections: the shaft of red sandstone; the faceted octagon; and the obelisk of grey sandstone. At the top is a modern metal orrery which shows the movements of the planets. The shaft is divided into four panels rather than the usual five. On this face are paired shields: the one to the right with the rampant lion representing Dugald Lamont of Lamont; the one to the left representing Margaret Stewart. Their initials are in the panel below the shields. Dugald was chief from 1712 to 1729 and he married his first wife Margaret in 1684. She died before 1723. The rest of the shaft is decorated with sunken circles, hearts and a chevron. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
