Scope and Content View of ceiling of stair-hall on first floor of Minard Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. This stair hall on the first floor has a dark wood panelled ceiling, decorated with cusped tracery which can be seen to the left. The tracery forms part of a pendant. There are also circular ornaments, known as bosses, on the flat areas of the ceiling. John Thomas Rochead worked on Minard Castle between 1842 and 1848 and was responsible for changing a Palladian house into a Gothic mansion. He was also responsible for the interior of the house, which was even more Gothic in style than the exterior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
