Catalogue Number SC 558870

Scope and Content Detail of north side of sundial at Ardlamont House, Argyll and Bute This sundial stands in the garden at Ardlamont House. It consists of three sections: the shaft of red sandstone; the faceted octagon; and the obelisk of grey sandstone. At the top is a modern metal orrery which shows the movement of the planets. The incised initials represent Dugald Lamont of Lamont and his wife, Margaret Stewart, whom he married in 1684. He was chief from 1712 to 1729 and his wife died before 1723. Above the initials are their coats of arms. Scotland today has a greater recorded number of complex 17th- and 18th-century sundials than other countries. It is also the only country to have recorded examples of obelisk dials. Sundials were also popular in Scotland in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
