Catalogue Number SC 558806

Copy of A 45864

Scope and Content Detail of newel-post on staircase in Ardpatrick House, Argyll and Bute Ardpatrick had been the seat of the MacAlisters of Loup throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The existing house was built in 1769 for Angus MacAlister by the master-mason John Menelaws and his brother Thomas, from Greenock. The interior of the house has been altered, although the original partitions on the ground floor still exist. The main early feature still surviving is this stone-built scale-and-platt stair at the rear of the central division on the ground floor. Although the balusters (to the right) have been renewed, the timber handrail and its spiral lower terminal, or newel-post, appear to be original. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
