Description Grangemouth Refinery, Interior View showing three effect evaporator in Aromatic Separating Plant

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 558482

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Part of Grangemouth Oil Refinery, Stirlingshire This was a part of the large refinery complex which was built to separate aromatic hydrocarbons (such as benzene) from paraffinic hydrocarbons, using sulphur dioxide as a solvent for the former. This view shows one of the two evaporators used to remove the sulphur dioxide from the aromatic hydrocarbon mixture after separation, so that the solvent could be recycled. This evaporator has five stages or 'effets'. This plant had closed by 1977, and was awaiting dismantling. It was an example of the type of equipment used in a whole range of chemical-related industries where separation of liquids and gases was based on differences in their boiling points.
