Description East Linton, Preston Mill General View

Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556574

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Preston Mill, East Linton, East Lothian This small water-powered corn mill is powered by water from the river Tyne. And is one of the most picturesque mills in Scotland. Its walls probably include masonry from the 17th century, but it has been substantially altered and re-equipped since then. This view shows the mill from the south west, with the polygonal kiln to the left, and the mill proper to the right. The low-breast wheel, with its inclined buckets, is a 20th century replacement of an earlier one. This mill was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland and brought back into working order in the late 1960s. The two pairs of stones and their associated gearing are of late 19th century date. The mill is open in summer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
