Description Forth Road Bridge General View

Date 1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556550

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Forth Road Bridge from Queensferry, West Lothian This bridge was built to replace the old-established Queen's Ferry across the Forth Estuary. It is the only large suspension bridge in Scotland, and was one of the last in the world to be built with an open-truss deck. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The open-truss deck is clearly visible. In front of the bridge is the harbour, reconstructed in 1809-18 to designs by John Rennie. The bridge remains substantially as built, to a design by Freeman Fox and Partners, though its crash-protetection measures have been improved. Its proximity to the world-renowned railway bridge perhaps reduces its visual impact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
