Scope and Content Harbour and kilns, Charlestown, Fife The lime works at Charlestown was established by the fifth Earl of Elgin to supply lime by sea to markets all over the east coast of Scotland. There were thick seams of limestone in the vicinity, and coal a short distance inland. This view shows the more recent kilns, at the west end of the works. To the left is a pair of four-draw kilns, then a single kiln with the same layout. The arch to the right is part of the original kiln range. The kilns operated until c1939, though the crushing of limestone continued into the 1950s. The crusher was sited where the openings can be seen in the upper part of the kiln block at the right end.
