Scope and Content Harbour, Charlestown, Fife The lime works at Charlestown was established by the fifth Earl of Elgin to supply lime by sea to markets all over the east coast of Scotland. There were thick seams of limestone in the vicinity, and coal a short distance inland. This view shows the original pier, on an irregular plan. The form of this pier suggests that it was built as part of a harbour with a west breakwater pier, removed when the harbour was enlarged c1840. The harbour was developed c1840 for the shipment of coal, brought by the privately-owned Elgin Railway from pits to the west of Dunfermline. The harbour was used for shipbreaking from the 1920s to the 1950s, and it is now a yacht haven. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
