Scope and Content The former Dreghorn Castle Lodge, Colinton, Edinburgh Dreghorn Castle, a 17th-century mansion, was probably built by Sir William Murray, Master of Works to King Charles II. It was one of Colinton's grandest houses, standing in extensive grounds to the south of the village, but was demolished in 1955. This lodge, in the form of a mini-castle, stood by the side of the old bridge in Redford Road. It was one of three lodges built in the 19th century when Dreghorn Castle was given its distinctive castellated appearance. It is now demolished. The estate belonged to the Foulis family of Colinton Castle in the 16th century. In 1671 it passed by marriage to Sir William Murray, who is thought to have built a 'manor place', parts of which survived within a later 19th-century building until 1955.
