Scope and Content Tapered slab, Oronsay priory, Oronsay, Argyll and Bute Over 30 medieval graveslabs are now stored in the building known as the Prior's House. In the 15th century the priory became an important centre for stone carving, creating products of what has become known as the 'Oronsay school'. This graveslab, in the style of the Iona school, is bordered with a double-moulding. There is an inscription in Lombardic capitals which reads as 'Here lies Canon Celestinus'. Below are two opposed and upside-down animals which are linked to an overall pattern of intertwined plant stems. Canon Celestinus is thought to have been the administrative controller when the cloister was remodelled soon after 1500. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
