Description Oronsay Priory, grave-slab. General view of grave-slab with interlace pattern carving.

Catalogue Number SC 536311

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 7278

Scope and Content Graveslab, Oronsay Priory, Oronsay, Argyll and Bute Over 30 medieval graveslabs are now stored in the building known as the Prior's House. In the 15th century the priory became an important centre for stone carving, creating products of what has become known as the 'Oronsay school'. This tapered slab with bevelled edges is bordered by a triple moulding. At the top there was a one-line inscription, now obliterated. Underneath are a hammer, anvil and tongs indicating that the person commemorated was a smith. There is a galley with a billowing sail, a hallmark of the Oronsay school of carving. The rest of the decoration consists of a central plant scroll and two rows of interlace with dragon-head terminals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
