Catalogue Number SC 536308

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 372

Scope and Content Graveslab, Oronsay Priory, Oronsay, Argyll and Bute Over 30 medieval graveslabs are now stored in the building known as the Prior's House. In the 15th century the priory became an important centre for stone carving. This stone commemorates Canon Bricius MacDuffie and Canon Patrick, his father. This tapered graveslab in the style of the Oronsay school, is decorated with the figure of an Augustinian canon possibly wearing a cope and carrying a book. The lower two-thirds of the stone are decorated with a claymore which is flanked by two beasts. It is possible that the canon's figure was added to a partially-carved graveslab kept in stock at the workshop of the Oronsay school, as the lower part of the slab is more accomplished.
